Correlations between dioxin-like and indicators PCBs: Potential consequences for environmental studies involving fish or sediment ArchiMer
Babut, M.; Miege, C.; Villeneuve, B.; Abarnou, Alain; Duchemin, J.; Marchand, P.; Narbonne, J. F..
Among the numerous PCB congeners, most of the dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) need to be characterized by hyphenated techniques. It has been shown in several instances that these congeners are well related to the total PCB content in fish. We examined datasets collected mainly in France, on freshwater and marine fish and sediments. A statistical model linking DL- and indicator PCBs was developed for a dataset composed of freshwater fishes, and proved to predict well DL-PCBs from indicator PCBs in all other fish sets, including marine ones. Type II error rates remained low in almost all fish sets. A similar correlation was observed in sediments. Non-dioxin-like PCBs elicit various adverse effects and represent 95% of the total PCBs. A European guideline for them...

Courantométrie du site d'élevage de salmonides en grande rade de Cherbourg ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel; Gaffet, Jean-dominique.
Current recordings were performed near the middle of the great breakwater of Cherbourg ("Grande Digue", inner side) during two months of the 1993 summer. The data show that, in this site, the currents drive mostly westwards. They are driving eastwards only during the first half of flood. In the tidal cycle, there is only one current slack, at law tide. The most important velocities are observed during the high tides : 0.5 to 0.6 m.s-1• The fish net pens, which are located there, tend to speed up the undemeath currents and, thus, contribute to scatter the farm effluents. The temperature and salinity records are also displayed. _

Cytochrome P450 detection in liver of the catfish Ancistrus multispinis (Osteichthyes, Loricariidae) BABT
Klemz,Claudio; Salvo,Ligia Maria; Bastos Neto,Jayme da Cunha; Bainy,Afonso Celso Dias; Assis,Helena Cristina da Silva de.
Sensitive biological responses to environmental contaminants are useful as early warning signals to predict the damages by long-term exposure. Protocols standardization to quantify biochemical parameters in different fish species is required to validate its use as biomarkers. Comparative studies from different fish species and its interpretation are a challenge for the validation of its use as general biomarkers, representative of environmental impact. In this study, the protocol for liver cytochrome P450 (CYP) analysis from the native Brazilian fish Ancistrus multispinis was established. The microsome contamination by hemoglobin during the analysis of CYP in liver was detected, leading to misinterpretation of the results. The spectrophotometric method for...

Cytogenetic and molecular markers reveal the complexity of the genus Piabina Reinhardt, 1867 (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Pazian,Marlon Felix; Pereira,Luiz Henrique Garcia; Shimabukuru-Dias,Cristiane Kioko; Oliveira,Claudio; Foresti,Fausto.
Cytogenetic and molecular analyses were carried out in fish representative of the genus Piabina. This study specifically involved the species P. argentea and P. anhembi collected from areas of the Paranapanema and Tietê River basins, Brazil. Our findings suggest that fish classified as Piabina argentea in the Paranapanema and Tietê Rivers may represent more than one species. The samples analyzed differed by cytogenetic particularities and molecular analyses using partial sequences of the genes COI and CytB as genetic markers revealed three distinct groups of P. argentea with genetic distances sufficient to support the conclusion that the three samples analyzed are three distinct taxonomic units.

Medrado,Aline Souza; Ribeiro,Mavione Souza; Affonso,Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello; Carneiro,Paulo Luíz Souza; Costa,Marco Antônio.
The fish genus Astyanax is widespread throughout the Neotropical region and is one of the most species-rich genera of the Characiformes. Cytogenetic studies of Astyanax have revealed marked intra-and interspecific diversity, with the identification of various species complexes. In this report, we describe the karyotypic structure of two sympatric species of Astyanax (Astyanax sp. and Astyanax aff. fasciatus) from the Middle Contas River basin in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. Both species had 2n = 48 but differed in their karyotypic formulae. Small heterochromatic blocks and multiple nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were identified in both species. Terminal CMA3+/DAPI-signals were observed in Astyanax sp. and A. aff. fasciatus, mostly...

DEMAND FOR MEAT AND FISH PRODUCTS IN KOREA AgEcon
Jung, Jione; Koo, Won W..
The Korean livestock industry is currently facing the critical challenge of the market liberalization trend under the World Trade Organization. This study analyzes the consumption behavior of meat and fish products in Korea, by estimating the Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS). The empirical results indicate that beef imports in Korea would increase in the future under trade liberalization. If cheap and better quality imported beef are introduced to Korean consumers, Hanwoo (Korean domestic cattle) beef would not maintain its market share. Key words: Meat, fish, trade liberalization, per capita consumption, demand, separability, and price elasticity.

Allaman,Ivan Bezerra; Reis Neto,Rafael Vilhena; Freitas,Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Rosa,Priscila Vieira; Lago,Aline de Assis; Costa,Adriano Carvalho.
The knowledge of how animals deposited chemical components as water, protein, fat and ash in the carcass is importance for the formulation of a balanced diet, allowing maximum performance with a low environmental impact. So, the study was carried out to evaluate the influence of different tilapia strains (Chitralada, Commercial, Red and Universidade Federal de Lavras [UFLA]) on the deposition of bodily chemical components in the carcass. The bodily components analyzed were water, protein, fat and ash. For the determination of the bodily chemical deposition curves by age, the exponential, Brody, logistic, Gompertz and von Bertalanffy models were adjusted. The Commercial and UFLA strains deposited water at a faster speed (P<0.05) compared with the...

Détection de la flore d'altération du poisson réfrigéré : évaluation d'un milieu de culture ArchiMer
Joffraud, Jean-jacques; Chevalier, Frederique.
The study submitted in this paper intendent to assess the ability of a culture medium for the detection and counting of chilled fish spoilage flora. Some authors used a medium allowing the detection of the whole spoilage bacteria on the basis of H2S production but this medium as been only used for cod flora analysis (Gadus morhua) coming from north sea or baltic sea. Therefore this study aimed to assess the efficiency of medium on withing flesh (Merlangius merlangus), gadidae of temperate sea water, on the one hand and salmon flesh (Salmo salar), aquacultural salmonidae, on the other hand. During this study, about 120 bacterial strains (half of them being H2S producing) were isolat respectively from whiting and salmon flesh stored in air or under vacuum....

Diet of Astyanax species (Teleostei, Characidae) in an Atlantic Forest River in Southern Brazil BABT
Vilella,Fábio Silveira; Becker,Fernando Gertum; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
Feeding habits of six species of Astyanax from river Maquiné are described. Fishes were sampled bi-monthly from November/95 to September/96 in two zones of the river. Items were identified, counted and had their abundance estimated according to a semi-quantitative scale. Frequency of occurrence, alimentary importance index (IFI) values and a similarity analysis of diets for each species-river zone sample were examined. All the species were considered typically omnivorous, with insects and vegetal matter being the most important items in their diet. These species could act as seed dispersers, particularly for macrophytes. Intra-specific spatial differences were not observed in comparisons of samples from two diferent regions of the river, except for A....
